I'm back and ready to write some more articles on topics that I've been speaking to lately.

Unfortunately, a lot of my friends have been laid off recently and are searching for a job in this terrible economy. I've picked up a lot of tips and tricks just from chatting with them and I'll write about them in several articles.

Today one of the topics I discussed with a recently laid off friend was "interview skills." She was interviewing for a job in which she found that the highest salary budgeted was $5k lower than her previous salary. Due to this, the interviewer was concerned with how she felt about this (she had worked in the same company before).

What's the correct response to "the position's salary grade is less than your salary range?"

Well, firstly, there isn't a "correct-correct" response, but there is definitely a very very incorrect way to go about it.

Possible scenarios:
A) You want to assure the interviewer that you are willing to accept this positioning. Afterall, "your job comes before salary" right?
B) You tell the interviewer that you understand, but hope they will reconsider due to what you can bring to the position.
C) You express major concern over this salary difference.

Scenario Explanations:
A) The most cautious response. You want the job - yes - but you don't want the interviewer to know that the salary decrease bothers you.
B) This is the "honest" route with a side of caution. Yes, the salary thing bothers you, but because you like the position, you hope that your skills will make them reconsider their budgeted salary.
C) Probably the worst way to respond. You're letting them know money is more important than the job.

I think this was a pretty obvious exercise, but what I should let you know is... IF and ONCE you get a job offer THEN you can NEGOTIATE. It's important to know that when an offer is given, yay, they like you! Yay you're qualified and YAY you have a bargaining chip. You can negotiate with them on salary most of the time and because you already know that you're qualified and they like you, you have a good chance of getting at least some of what you want (even if it may not be 100% of what you want).

Good article from the NY Times giving the facts on what the general demographics of the Recession of 2008 looks like.

Here are two interesting facts:

The recession is hurting more men than women
More Latinos than any other ethnic group are out of work

States that have seen high unemployment before are seeing even higher numbers now. The article suggests that the only thing that could possibly help bring us out of recession successfully is for young people to become more educated. Yet I feel like that's very post Great Depression logic. There is already a large portion of highly educated individuals in the United States and many of them are out of a job (it's not just manufacturing jobs anymore!).

Standing out

Another job article update from S. Chan.

Trying to stand out in a job is tough. Especially when you have no network, little experience or even no background on a field you want to enter.

That's why leverage is the way to go when trying to figure out how a company needs your set of skills. Even if you do NEED a job, the company you're applying to should never feel like they will be helping you, in fact, you should let them know they need you and you will be there to help them.

Giving off the scent of desperation never helped anyone in any situation.

In this article, a woman moves to new city in a new country in hopes to finding a dream job. With no contacts, network to speak of, she set off to separate herself from the pack. She leveraged her skills to show that the PR companies she was looking into, needed someone like her. This story has a happy ending, and if you think creatively enough, anyone's story can have a happy ending.

Reinvent Yourself

Thanks to S. Chan for this article in regards to reinventing yourself.

Your skills shouldn't limit you to only one field. For example, a political science degree doesn't always equal a future career in law or getting a degree in engineering shouldn't always equate into becoming an engineer. There are many roads one can take, and that definitely include repurposing your skills to find something new and fresh for your background.

See articles from Newsweek and Gawker, because I can completely believe it. More drinking? Check. Rallying against their non-laid off counterparts (I believe, men and women alike). Check. Trying to become more manly men? Check????

Ok, so not all of these things may be true (for obvious reasons), but even for women, this will be an interesting phenomenon to look at. I wonder who will discuss this next?

Doostang's 25,000+ New Job Postings

According to an email from Doostang.com, there are more than 25,000 new job postings on their sites. It's good to see that at least some people are hiring.

A lot of industries have been hit, but there are still a lot of industries going strong. For instance, there is never any job that is recession-proof, but there are jobs and careers that do better than others in hard times. For instance, education, health-care and energy are all jobs that can appear to be "recession-proof."

According to this email from Doostang, it states that there are jobs from Morgan Stanley, Disney, Microsoft, Gap, Nike and Genentech. Well, in my mind, I am sure they have already cut some senior people to save some money, so therefore, the people they are hiring are probably relatively low-mid level employees. So if you're in that level in your life, then these positions might be worth taking a look.

Also, while looking at these postings - don't be afraid to RELOCATE!

"New York's unemployment claims systems have crashed, overwhelmed by tens of thousands of jobless New Yorkers trying to call or log in at once ahead of this week's filing deadline. State labor department officials say the problem started Monday and caused the phone banks at the state's toll-free claims center to shut down, followed by the online filing system ... Technicians are trying to bring the systems back online Tuesday afternoon but officials couldn't say when they'll be back up and available."

Lifehacker has a great article about expected response ratio for each job you apply to. Remember, this ratio is probably something like 10:1 or 15:1 if you have little to no experience (ie, entry-level employees fresh out of college).

When I applied for my first job, I applied to approximately 130 positions (wow, I know) and got probably about 15 responses (wow, crappy I know).

Just remember: BE PERSISTENT (but not overly persistent)

Selling advertising for display "at the gas pumps... at the malls." You can tell your friends you work in "out of home advertising" if you prefer, although then they'll probably assume you sell those ads above urinals in bars.
Pharmaceutical advertising, aka "direct-to-consumer advertising." If you're lucky, this means helping with print or TV ads. If you're not, you may well be spamming ads for "V1agra," or designing/selling Web ads that are barely a step above.
"Contract and consulting opportunities," miscellaneous.

But sometimes you have to make do with what you have...

Thanks to my friend Jeff C., my attention has been brought to this article in regards to the auto industry -- the very same auto industry that is on the brink of going bankrupt and could make Detroit lose about 1 million jobs. Right now, unless the auto industry straightens itself up, even hiring Steve Jobs, won't be able to save it.

First of all - the Jobs Bank Program - which was from an article written in 2005 sheds quite a bit of light on how the auto industry was (and maybe still IS!?) floating around on money they shouldn't be spending. No matter how much I support unions, no one would be sitting around doing crossword puzzles and getting paid $31 per hour. What productivity will come of that?

The Auto Industry is in dire straights. Those smart enough to realize that riding out time in the Jobs Bank is much better than taking a retirement package have ended up doing nothing for full pay and benefits.

I'm surprised GM has survived as long as it has with reports of the removal of the Jobs Bank being critical to its survival as far back as 2006. Especially since on GM's website itself, some post-retirement employees will still receive payment until 2010.

All I can say is -- I thank my lucky stars that my dad left the auto industry before he was left to rot in that sinking ship. But for a more positive thought -- let's just hope that the auto industry will hang on, or Michigan is going to sink into a worse depression than it has in the past.

A 21st Century WPA?

I don't know how many of you recall the WPA from your US History class, but I recall the lesson on this time in history quite clearly. The WPA is the Works Progress Administration that was created by our 32nd President - Franklin Delano Roosevelt - as part of the New Deal.

Now what does this mean you must be asking. FDR set off to create programs to bring back the economy from the Great Depression. The largest of these programs was the WPA. The jobs created by the WPA and the work done by the people who participated can still be seen today around the US. For instance, a lot of the national infrastructure (roads, rail, etc) , working on buildings, as well as even planting neat rows of trees in our national forests.

Even the November 24, 2008 issue on Time brings up the idea of what President-Elect Obama can learn from FDR.

Really though, should we or can we re-create a program like the WPA to save our economy?

I've found a new book to read. It's called "How To Be Useful" and it's by Megan Hustad (someone who used to work in publishing). Supposedly it's supposed to be a "completely original" and a great and easy read.

Recession Proofing Your Job?

There are tons of articles out there about layoffs, finding new jobs, saving money, etc. Lately though, more and more of these articles seem to be appearing online. One of the blogs I read often, Get Rich Slowly, has a round-up of some articles and stories from people who have been laid-off in the past. Then there's the section about recession-proofing your job.

Can you really recession-proof your job though? What about recession-proof jobs? Is there really such a thing as a recession proof-job?

Doubtful you can recession-proof anything 100%, but at least you can take the precaution so you won't have to struggle in the case of a lay-off.

There are SO MANY job search sites out there these days -- what are the best? (Comment and I'll add more here later)

Indeed.com - One of the best (aggregated) search engines out there. Crawls through tons of job postings. Put in keywords and location and poof! You got results.
SimplyHired.com - Looks very similar to Indeed.com, may have more options to sort by, worth a look.
FedWorld.gov - All the government jobs you need right here. Take a quick look and see if anything catches your eye.
America's Job Bank - This will take you to find your state's job exchange website.
Craig's List - Be wary of Craig's List, but there are some real gems on here. Reading some of the postings because they are ridiculous is a lot of fun as well.

There are a ton more, but my favorite is definitely Indeed.com. Type in a keyword and you can search through hundreds (maybe thousands!?) of websites.

Appearance Does Matter

Awhile back, I read that salary correlates with height. I am 5'1" and that makes me sad. I have also heard that beauty (attractiveness / handsomeness / whatever you want to call it) also correalates with salary - among many things.

Now, I don't think I'm unattractive, but I know that there are ways you improve your attractiveness that can improve your "image" in the office.

An article from Working Girl blog titled "How To Be "Pretty' At Work" gives some more detail in regards to this trend and some simple tips to improve how you appear in the office.

"Dress well" is a big one. I highly suggest investing in a solid work wardrobe. Clothing that will always appear to be classic. Investing in an iron board and iron would also be highly suggested (or having a great dry-cleaner).

Remember: it's about quality, not quantity, so think twice when you're picking between buying 5 cheap sweaters versus one or two nice ones. The nice ones will last longer and look better in the long-run.

Resumes Are Going Virtual

I cannot stress enough how doing things "differently" can make you stand out as a potential employee. One way is having a "Virtual Resume." In July 08 article from the NY Times' Shifting Career Blog, they explain how more resumes are going virtual. I don't suggest going completely virtual like the article suggests (unless you want to go into a field that highly supports that "unique subculture").

Having a "virtual resume" should be in addition to your print resume. Besides providing a space to download a digital copy of your resume, it should also allow a viewer to learn more about you. You can allow them to see into the type of work you have previously done, as well as see full lists of your activities and previous employment.

Overall, in this digital world -- having a virtual resume never hurt anyone and should only benefit if you put as much work into it as you put into your print resume.

Unemployment could hit 9% this year - and what if that 9% includes you? Robert Scoble who has a great blog - Scobleizer - has some great tips for those facing layoffs during a recession. Here are some of the points that I felt were most relevant:

1. Don't Get Lazy
2. Make sure you spend at least 30% of every day trying to find a job.
3. Start a blog on the field you want to work in.
4. Do things that will get you to be recognized as a world leader in the field you want to be in.
5. Show your friends your resume and cover letter.

The Art of the Farewell E-Mail

Whether you're leaving voluntarily (changing careers, going back to school, retiring) or involuntarily (sadly laid off or fired), there is that uncomfortable thought of saying "good-bye."

The New York Time's Shifting Career's blog has a great article on the art of writing a farewell letter. Although the letter they posted was "ok" to me, it still has some interesting points.

Saying goodbye is always hard, but keeping it light-hearted with a "keep in touch" should earn kudo points.

I am a big fan of a good thank you note. Always handwritten, always well thought out. Thank you notes are a great way to gain a favor with the recipient. The advice given in this article does leave a good point. Here is an excerpt.

While it may feel like an odd time for gratitude, you may make some good impressions by composing a few handwritten thank-you notes to those who have helped you in your career. Similarly, if you can craft a graceful departure email thanking colleagues for their support, providing your personal contact information and saying you are open to any leads or introductions, again you may be pleased with the results.

I felt this graph illustrated how your savings should look pretty sufficiently. Sadly, rent is indeed 30% on here (It's New York! What'd you expect!?), although nationally, most people recommend it be about 24% of your income.

A good place to start with personal finance is I Will Teach You To Be Rich. This is a great blog with a lot of great tips in regards to investing your money and working through tricky money situations. Currently they are running a "Save $1000 in 30 Days Challenge" which would be a good time to implement if you're looking to save a little cash. Everyday (this began Nov 1st) he'll be listing out a new tip. He's on tip 7 (although he should be on 11, but he skipped over the weekend). Some of the tips may or may not apply to you, but they are still some good ideas to save even just a little bit of cash. Anyone should practice a little frugality in a poor economy. It's a safe and easy way to "prevent" any money disasters.

Hopefully reading the article will offer some insightful advice. Note that some parts really only pertain to New Yorkers. It's called "Phase Three" because it was part of a 3-article special about Jobs. Phase I was finding your dream job (this article kind of sucked) and Phase II was keeping your job. This is a well known and growing job search networking website. As their website states:

Notch Up is relatively new to the market. It's currently marked as still being in beta, but it's an interesting concept that can grow to be a sensation. The concept behind the site is for recruiters to find candidates. (Sounds like every other search website, but supposedly it's not). It also pays for interviews and users can rate interviewers. Users are protected by being assigned an number and remaining anonymous except for their credentials.

To be extremely frank, I just signed up for Linked In about 5 minutes ago. It seems most professionals use this website to network and keep in touch with colleagues. It appears to be a glorified resume that you can link to other people.

Monster.com (Open) & CareerBuilder.com (Open)
Be wary when it comes to Monster.com and/or CareerBuilder.com. Although it is possible to find legitimate interviews and companies, many of those who contact you will quickly become spam. I speak from experience of myself, relatives and other people I know who have signed up for these sites.

Jobster.com (Open)
Jobster is another one of those networking sites where I haven't decided if it's good or bad yet. They send out emails with jobs in your area based on your experience. Although most of the jobs I have seen aren't ones that I would enjoy, I still think this site is worth a look.
